Spartans Rally Falls Short, Downed 73-64

December 18, 2010

San Jose, Calif.----Brittany Johnson notched her second double-double of the year, while three San Jose state players scored in double-figures, in a 73-64 loss against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday night.  The Spartans fall to 0-10 overall and the Mustangs improve to 4-5.

With four lead changes in a back-and-fourth game, the Spartans found themselves down by as much as 26 points at 14:03 in the second, but closed the gap to three points with two minutes remaining in play.

"I can't be any prouder of their effort," added head coach Pam DeCosta. "They finally fought and competed, the one thing we have been trying to get them to do.  We were down by 26 and they fought and clawed their way back."

After finding themselves down 8-0 early in the first half, the Spartans rallied to tie the game 12-12 from a Sara Plavljanin 3-point conversion at 6:22.   The Spartans would eventually take the lead with AJ Newton's layup to make it 14-13.

After trailing 23-17 at half, the Mustangs went on a 22-3 run to make it 46-20 with 14 minutes remaining, but the Spartans scored 30 points during the next 11 minutes to make it 63-60 with three minutes left on the clock.

A 3-point finisher from Ashlee Burns sealed the victory for the Mustangs, handing San Jose State its tenth loss of the season.

"This is a great starting point for us," said DeCosta.  "These games prepare you for conference and we just have to keep building, believing, and staying together."

San Jose State scored a season-high 30 points from the bench and finished shooting 40% to the Mustangs' 42.1%.  The Spartans 47-point second-half is the highest this season.

Newton led the Spartans in scoring with 19 points, followed with 16 points from Johnson and 15 points from Plavljanin.  Johnson's team-leading ten boards gave her a double-double, her second of the season.

Senior Rachel Clancy ran away with a whopping 26 points for the Mustangs and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, tying with Abby Bloetscher's nine boards.

The Spartans will take their momentum into Tuesday's game when they host UC Davis at The Event Center on December 21.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
