Poor Shooting Dooms WBB Against Santa Clara

San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women's basketball team suffered their worst shooting night of the season, hitting just 23 percent from the floor, and lost to the Santa Clara Broncos 62-47 in The Event Center.

The Spartans (3-6) hit just 15-of-63 shot attempts on the night.  Santa Clara wasn't much more impressive, making 24-of-69 for 34 percent shooting.

San Jose State held the Broncos (5-4) leading-scorer Meagan Fulps to five points; 10 below her season average.  However, Ricki Radanovich hit five three pointers en route to a game-high 21 points and Lindsey Leo had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Ta'Rea Cunnigan scored the Spartans first six points and finished the night with 20, but Santa Clara twice built a 15-point lead in the first half and took a 33-22 advantage into the half.

The Spartans came out in the second half on fire.  They ran off eight straight points and cut the Broncos lead to three, 33-30, with 17:42 to play.  Then for the next seven plus minutes they failed to score, getting no more than one shot on 14 of their next 16 possessions.  Over that span Santa Clara ripped off 17-straight points and took a 50-30 lead with 10:30 to play.

Four times over the final 10 minutes Santa Clara had a 22-point advantage before San Jose State cut the lead to 15 points at the final horn.

The Spartans forced 28 turnovers to Santa Clara's 25, but weren't able to take advantage being outscored 34-to-21 in points off turnovers.

San Jose State also lost the battle on the boards.  Emily Schill and Riana Byrd had 22 of the team's 38 rebounds, grabbing 11 each, but the Spartans saw the Santa Clara grab a season high 57 rebounds on the night.

San Jose State travels to play the San Francisco Dons on Saturday.  Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m. in War Memorial Gym.
