Women's Basketball Downed At Denver

December 11, 2010

Denver, Colo.----San Jose State trailed 33-10 at the half and fell 64-27 in Saturday's contest at Denver. The loss drops the Spartans to 0-9, while the Pioneers improve to 6-4.

"I was disappointed in today's performance," noted head coach Pam DeCosta. "No matter what the adversity we face this year, I expect the team to continue to fight."

The Spartans were held to 23.8% shooting (10-of-42) from the floor, 0-of-6 from three-point range, and made 7-of-11 at the free throw line for 63.6%.

The Spartans were led by Sara Plavljanin with eight points followed with Sayja Sumler's six.

Sumler saw a team-leading 34 minutes of action, appearing in her first game since November 19 where she suffered a lower back injury.

"It was great to have Sayja back for today's game," noted DeCosta. "She was the bright spot in our performance. She is a true fighter and competitor."

The Spartans scored the second fewest points in a game in the program's 36-year history, only the contest vs. Utah on February 18, 1999 had fewer total points with 26.

Others contributing for San Jose State include Brittany Johnson who led the team with eight rebounds including five defensive boards. Dominique Hamilton came off the bench to score four points, grab two rebounds and swipe one steal.

Denver had two players in double-digit scoring, Britteni Rice (18) and Kaetlyn Murdoch (13). Rice went 4-of-7 from the arc and notched four assists.

After playing seven of eight games on the road, San Jose State will return home for its next nine of eleven games at The Event Center. The Spartans will host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Saturday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m.
