WBB Downed By S. Utah And The 3-Pointer

San Jose, Calif. – The Southern Utah University (SUU) Thunderbirds (4-4) hit 15 3-pointers en route to a 93-82 win over the San Jose State women’s basketball team in The Event Center.

The 15 treys are a season-high for the Thunderbirds, an Event Center record and equals the most allowed by San Jose State (3-5) this season.  They gave up 15 at Evansville on November 17.

Hailey Mandelko hit a team-high six 3-pointers for SSU, who shot 58 percent from beyond the arc for the game and a blistering 69 percent in the second half.  Mandelko finished with a game-high 27 points.

Playing with just seven players, the Spartans never led and saw Southern Utah build as high as a 16-point advantage in the first half before going to the locker rooms down 48-37.

In the second half, the Spartans made several runs, but each time they got the lead down to single digits, the Thunderbirds hit a 3-pointer to change the momentum.  With 8:25 to play San Jose State trimmed the advantage to seven, 77-70, but SUU hit 3-pointers on three of their next four possessions to push the margin out  to 13 and won by 11 points, 93-82.

The Spartans forced 37 turnovers, which they used for a 33-to-25 advantage in second chance points, but for the second time in three games they turned the ball over 30+ times and struggled to deal with their opponents press.

“I was happy with the amount of times we turned them over and the points we got going the other way, but we have to cut down on our own mistakes,” said head coach Tim La Kose.  “We are giving up to many easy buckets and that along with the rebounding differential are big reasons why we've struggled in the last few games.”

The Spartans were out rebounded 43-to-37 overall and 20-to-12 on the offensive glass.

Riana Byrd led the Spartans with a season-high 24 points, one of four players to score in double figures.  Ta’Rea Cunnigan had 18 points, Alexis Hill scored 14 and Emily Schill added 10.

The Spartans host South Bay rival Santa Clara on Wednesday, December  12, in The Event Center.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
