Spartans Fall To UNLV At Home, 80-48

San Jose, Calif.----The San Jose State women's basketball team fell behind 16-7 early, and lost to UNLV, 80-48 on Sunday afternoon, December 5, at The Event Center. The Lady Rebels improved to 5-2 on the year while the Spartans fell to 0-8.

San Jose State was paced by Sara Plavljanin's 14 points, while Brittany Johnson notched 13. Dominique Hamilton and Johnson each grabbed four rebounds. The Spartans were held to 35.4% shooting (17-of-48) from the floor, 1-of-8 from three-point range, and made 13-of-16 at the free throw line for 81.3%.

The Lady Rebels were led by Kelli Thompson with a game-high 16 points, which included four from three-point range. The next highest scorer was Erica Helms with 11 off the bench and Sandrine Nzeukou posted ten rebounds.

UNLV scored the game's first seven points, before the Spartans tallied five straight to close within 7-5 with 16:42 on the first half clock. The Lady Rebels then blew the game open with an 18-4 run over an 8:36 span. The Spartans closed the lead to 14 twice, but  UNLV would take a 41-25 edge into halftime.

"The kids fought hard early and played well," stated head coach Pam DeCosta. "We fell behind and couldn't dig down deep enough to get over the hump."

The Lady Rebels made sure there was no doubt of the outcome by starting the second half on a 14-4 run. The lead grew to as high as 33, 65-32, on India Chaney's second three-pointer of the game. Plavljanin finished the scoring for the Spartans with a jumper at 0:52 to make it 48-78. The Rebels came back and finished with a layup, shooting a season-high 47% (31-of-66) from the floor to end the game 80-48.

The Spartans travel to the Mile High City to face the Denver Pioneers on Saturday, December 11 at 1:30 p.m. (MST).
