San Jose, Calif. - Four Spartans scored in double figures, but Pacific took 78 shots to San Jose State's 54, making 28 to the Spartans 20 and defeated San Jose State 74-60 on Monday night in The Event Center. The loss is the Spartans first on their home court this year.
Ta'Rea Cunnigan led the team with 14 points. Chereese Thomas equaled her season-high with 13 and Emily Schill and Riana Byrd had 12 points each.
The Spartans (3-4) had leads of 2-0 and 6-4 after a Thomas jumper 30 second into the game and a Schill layup just over two minutes later, but those would be the only leads the team would enjoy on the night.
Pacific, paced by 10 first-half points from Kendall Rodriguez, established a nine-point advantage, 24-15, with 8:51 to go before the half. Byrd scored seven of the Spartans next nine points and added another layup before the half to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Spartans down 32-37.
Pacific (7-0) opened the second half with a 17-to-6 run. They had a 16-point lead, which they increased to a game-high of 23 with 4:12 to play. The Spartans closed the game with an 11-2 run to make the final score 74-60.
The Tigers also had four players in double figures led by a pair of double doubles. Kendall Kenyon and Ashley Wakefield got 10 points, 15 rebounds and 11 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
On the boards, Pacific beat the Spartans 53-36 including 24-to-12 on the offensive glass which they used to an 18-to-4 advantage in second chance points. In addition, they hit 11-of-12 free throws while San Jose State missed 11 of their 29 attempts from the line.
San Jose State returns to action on Saturday, December 8 against Southern Utah in The Event Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
