Second-Half Comback Falls Short, Women's Hoops Fall 67-53

December 1, 2010

Flagstaff, Ariz.---Three San Jose State players scored in double-figures, but the Spartans couldn't hold off Northern Arizona University, losing their seventh straight, 67-53.

AJ Newton finished the night with a team-high 18 points, while Brittany Johnson scored 16, and Sara Plavljanin netted ten with five assists.  Dominique Hamilton grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, followed by Plavljanin with seven.

Amy Patton led the Lumberjacks with 28 points, ten rebounds and four steals.

The Lumberjacks built a double-digit lead in the first courtesy of a 9-0 run at the 11:51 mark, but the Spartans went on a 12-4 run to close the gap 36-23 during the final five minutes of the first half. Despite only shooting 38.5% as a team in the first twenty, freshman AJ Newton recorded double-digit scoring with ten points, going 4-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from the arc.

Sara Plavljanin's two made free throws at 12:30 put the Spartans within six points at 44-38 in a second-half comeback. After committing four turnovers in a span of three minutes, San Jose State's second-half surge was short-lived as the Lumberjacks scored 12 straight making it 56-38 with 8:25 left in regulation.

The Spartans trailed by as many as 18 points late in the second half. Perhaps the difference maker in the game was San Jose State's 24 turnovers, which Northern Arizona capitalized 22 points off those turnovers throughout the game.

Both teams had trouble at the line with the Spartans shooting 50% going 8-of-16, and the Lumberjacks shooting 8-of-22 going 36.4%.

"I'm proud the way we fought for 40 minutes," head coach Pam DeCosta added. "These kids have faced adversity from the start of the season, but they are sticking together and getting better."

The Spartans finished shooting 40.4% from the field, grabbing their second best shooting percentage of the season (41.5%, 11/17 at San Francisco).

The Spartans return home on Sunday, December 5 to face UNLV at The Event Center. Tip-off us scheduled at 2:00 p.m.
