San Jose, Calif. – San José State senior Dezz Ramos had one of the best weeks in recent Spartans women’s basketball history and for her effort is the Mountain West Player of the Week. The announcement came from the conference’s office in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Monday morning.
In two games last week, the point guard out of West Hills, Utah, averaged 34.0 points and 8.5 assists as the team split a pair of games.
On Friday night, she matched a Spartan Event Center record with 38 points in the team’s 99-96 overtime loss at the hands of the Pacific Tigers. Ramos’ point total was her career-high and equaled Danada Smith, who set the mark on December 30, 2000 against Long Island. In addition to her scoring, she dished out eight assists, had two rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.
Ramos came right back on Sunday afternoon and dropped 30 points on Santa Clara and had nine assists to lead the team to its first win of the season. She scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to help secure the victory.
For the week, she shot 50 percent from the field (22-of-44), 46 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-13) and was 18-of-19 (95 percent) from the free throw line.
This is Ramos’ first Mountain West’s Player of the Week honor and it is the first for the team this season.
San José State travels to Hawai’i for their next three games. The team will compete in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown from November 25-27. In successive days SJSU will face host Hawai’i, Oregon and #10 Mississippi State.
