Spartans Outlasted At The University Of The Pacific

November 19, 2010

Stockton, Calif.----San Jose State held the University of the Pacific to a season-low 27 points in the first half, but Pacific scored 43-points in the second half, to win the game 70-57 Friday night, November 19.

San Jose State was slightly edged in field goal percentage, shooting 38.8 percent from the field, while Pacific finished the night at 39 percent.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get to the foul line all the first half," added head coach Pam DeCosta. "We can't settle for outside shots."

San Jose State finished with 14 points from the free throw line, all coming in the second half, as they went on to score a season-high 36 points in the second half.

Britney Bradley and Brittany Johnson led the Spartans with 14 points each. AJ Newton dished out six assists and Sayja Sumler grabbed nine rebounds.

Sumler left the game with 8:41 remaining in the second half with a lower back injury. San Jose State has had a string of bad luck with five other Spartans' sidelined due to injury. Brieanna Ashley, Palagi Atoe, Rachel Finnegan, Marnesha Hall, and Sara Plavljanin are out indefinitely due to injuries. Sumler is questionable to return in San Jose State's next game at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, November 21.

The Tigers leading scorer, Danielle Peacon, scored 22 points and Jordan Rogers netted 14.

San Jose State pulled within four points at 4:23 in the first half after Dominique Hamilton sunk a layup to make it 21-17, but the Spartans could not get within striking distance in the remaining game.

"I thought our kids fought, but we need to come out and be aggressive for 40 minutes," explained coach DeCosta. "Our injuries are hurting us, but we need to find a way and everyone just needs to give a little more."

San Jose State falls to 0-3 for the season, while Pacific improves to 2-1. The Spartans travel to Fullerton to face the Titans on Sunday, November 21. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
