James Leads Women's Hoops To Season Opening Win

San Jose, Calif. - Classye James had a game-high 21 points, including hitting 11-for-12 from the free throw line, and three other Spartans scored in double figures as the San Jose State women's basketball team pulled away from the San Francisco State Gators in the second half for a 70-51 season-opening victory on Friday night in The Event Center.

The win is the first home and season opening win for the Spartans since a 69-61 victory over Gonzaga to start the 2005-06 campaign.

Emily Schill, had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Ta'Rea Cunnigan got 16 points and eight boards and Chereese Thomas added 10 points and had six steals.

Despite a slow start, shooting just 30 percent from the floor in the first half and two separate times going down by nine points, the Spartans (1-0) battled back.

With 8:58 to go in the half the score was 23-14 in favor of San Francisco State (0-1).  Over the next three minutes the Spartans went on a 10-to-0 run, led by six points from James.  San Jose State took their first lead, 24-23, with 5:42 on the clock and the teams went to the half tied 31-31.

Coming out of the locker room,  San Jose State outscored the Gators, 13-to-3 in the first five minutes, and were never seriously threatened after that; hitting 46 percent (13-for-28) of their shots in the final 20 minutes.

A Jamiyla DeBoise layup with 9:21 to play gave San Jose State a 16-point, 57-41 lead.  Then with 2:41 to play, DeBoise hit a free throw to stretch the advantage to 19 points, 68-49.

For the game, San Jose State made 21-of-29 free throws compared to San Francisco State's 4-of-10.

All eight Spartans saw significant playing time and each contributed in the scoring column.

Their two big scorers led San Francisco State.  Nicole Hicks topped the team with 14 points and Farrah Shokoor added 13 points and six boards.

San Jose State's next game is against Utah Valley University on Thursday, November 15 at 5:00 p.m in The Event Center.
