San Jose, Calif. - With the release of an 18-game slate of Mountain West contests, the San José State Spartan women's basketball schedule is complete for the 2014-15 season. Head coach Jamie Craighead announced the entire 29-game schedule Thursday.
"In putting together our non-conference schedule the goal was to prepare us for the tough play in the Mountain West," Craighead said. "We are playing three Pac-12 opponents who have all been NCAA Tournament teams. The rest of our non-conference schedule is filled with teams who have the ability to compete for conference championships this year and will provide early tests for us."
The Spartans open the regular season, on November 14, at their first Pac-12 opponent of the year, Utah. Two nights later, on November 16, the home opener features the Columbia Lions on Walt McPherson Court.
San José State makes a three-day trip to southern California for games at UC Riverside (Nov. 20) and UC Irvine (Nov. 22). They then return to the Bay Area for Cal's Thanksgiving weekend tournament. The Spartans take the court in Haas Pavilion, scene of their stunning 68-66 upset of the Golden Bears in 2009, to face the host in the opening game (Nov. 28) and will then play either Cincinnati or Creighton on November 29.
Southern Oregon comes to town on December 2. That game is followed by at trip to play their final Pac-12 opponent, Colorado, on December 5.
The non-conference schedule wraps up with home games against UC Davis (Dec. 10) and Sacramento State (Dec. 22) sandwiched around a final road contest at San Francisco (Dec. 20).
The Spartans open their second season in the Mountain West on New Year's Eve against Utah State in The Event Center. They are then at Wyoming (Jan. 3) and home for games against Air Force (Jan. 7) and UNLV (Jan. 10).
San José State then plays a pair of road games; at 2014 MW Tournament Champion Fresno State (Jan. 14) and 2014 MW regular season champion Colorado State (Jan. 17). The Spartans split the regular season series with each last year.
Boise State comes to town on January 21 followed by a trip to Air Force (Jan. 28) for a matchup with the Falcons, who they swept last season. New Mexico is at The Event Center on January 31, followed by Fresno State on February 4.
The team then heads to Nevada for a February 7 matchup before hosting the Wyoming Cowgirls on February 14.
The Spartans wrap up the regular season with four-of-six games on the road. They will be at Utah State (Feb. 18), San Diego State (Feb. 21), Boise State (Mar. 3) and UNLV (Mar. 6) and host Colorado State (Feb. 25) and Nevada (Feb. 28).
The 2015 Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship will be held from March 9-13 in the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
"We return all of our major contributors from last year's team," Craighead said. "Plus, we gain experienced players who sat out last season. Those two elements combined with talented new student-athletes, who can contribute to our program immediately, will make this an exciting season for out team and our fans."
