Cunnigan & Smith Earn All-Mountain West Honors

March 9, 2014

Colorado Springs, Colo. - Junior Ta'Rea Cunnigan is an Honorable Mention All-Mountain West performer and freshman Jasmine Smith has earned Mountain West All-Freshman Team selection by a vote of the Mountain West Conference's 11 head coaches.

"Any individual recognition that our players get is great for our program, especially since we are in our first year in the league," head coach Jamie Craighead said.  "These individual awards are a testament to how hard Ta'Rea and Jasmine have worked this year, but are also a reflection of a total team effort.  No single player can be recognized without the help of their teammates."

Cunnigan, a junior out of Winchester, Calif., was the Mountain West's second leading scorer (18.3/g) while leading the Spartans to five conference victories.

She also ranks fifth in the conference in steals, ninth in 3-point and seventh in minutes played.  She attempted and converted more free throws than any player in the WAC.

The 5-9 guard from Chaparral High School, became the 13th Spartans to reach the 1,000-point plateau earlier this season and now stands 16 points from 1,500 for her career.  In addition, she entered the top-10 of five career categories this year and is now in the top-10 of eight overall.

Smith, a forward out of Bellarmine Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, averaged 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 offensive boards, both fifth best league play.  Her .476 shooting percentage is the 10th highest in conference action and the best on the team.  Her 10 blocks and 21 steals are second and third best on the team.

Smith was second on the team with 132 boards and led the squad with 54 offensive rebounds.  She averaged 9.9 points in Mountain West games while coming off the bench in 11 of the team's 18 league contests.
