RAMOS HONORED FOR THE THIRD TIME THIS SEASON AS MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Averaging 30.5 points, 5.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds in two victories last week, senior Dezz Ramos is the Mountain West Player of the Week for the third time this season.
In victories over Fresno State and Air Force, the West Valley, Utah native, hit 20-of-46 shots from the floor (43.5 percent) including going 9-of-18 from three-point range and sank 12-of 15 shots from the free throw line.
Against Fresno State, Ramos shined in the fourth quarter and overtime. She scored 20 of her team-high 27 points in the final 15 minutes of play, shooting 5-of-9 from the field (55.6 percent) and hitting 9-of-12 from the line. In overtime, she scored nine of the team’s 17 points, including nine of the last 11, and was 7-of-10 from the free throw line in the last 2 minutes to secure the victory.
At Air Force, Ramos shot 12-of-16 (46.1 percent) and totaled 17 of her game-high 34 points in the fourth quarter. In the final period she was 5-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range and hit all three free throw attempts. Up by 11 with 1:42 to go, she drained another three and sank two FTs to secure the 16-point win.
CRAIGHEAD GETS 100th CAREER VICTORY IN WIN AT AIR FORCE
With the team’s 83-67 victory at Air Force (2/18), head coach Jamie Craighead reached the 100-win plateau for her career. It is her 49th win at SJSU, tying her with Karen Smith (1993-99) for third place on the program all-time wins list. The late Janice Richard (1999-2006) ranks second with 93 wins and Sharon Chatman (1977-86), with 143 victories, is the all-time leader in wins as a had coach and is the only coach in SJSU women’s basketball with a winning record (143-121/.542).
The Air Force victory was the team’s 10th of the year. In each of Craighead’s four seasons at San José State she has led the team to double digit wins...Why is that notable. Other than Richard, no head coach has led the Spartans to at least 10 wins in four consecutive seasons. Richard did it in six straight (2001-06) and Chatman did it four times, but never more than twice in a row.
ALUMNI GAME FEBRUARY 25 VS. BOISE STATE
The Spartans welcome their alumni back to The Event Center for the team’s game against Boise State on Saturday, February 25 with tip off set for 2:00 p.m. All former women’s basketball players in attendance will be recognized and honored at halftime and will be included in a day full of activities. Alumni can RSVP to Chereese Thomas (firstname.lastname@example.org).
RAMOS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN PROHOOPS COMBINE
Senior Dezz Ramos (Sr., PG, West Valley, Utah) has accepted an invitation to the ProHoops Combine, which is the premier combine for potential professional basketball players. WNBA coaches and general managers, agents and foreign coaches will be on hand to evaluate players in preparation for the draft and foreign team opportunities. The combine will be conducted in conjunction with the Women’s NCAA Final Four on April 1 in Dallas, Texas.
GOING FOUR IN A ROW ON THE ROAD
With its win at Air Force, the Spartans have won three straight road games for the first time since the 2010-11. The longest streak of road wins in program history is eight (8) in the 1978-79 season. That team finished 24-4 and featured San José State Hall of Fame members Elinor Banks (1978-81), Karen Mason (1978-81) and Wanda Thompson (1978-81) and was led the SJSU Hall of Fame Coach Sharon Chatman (1977-86).
