Women's Hoops Wins Fourth Straight At Home

San Jose, Calif. - Riana Byrd had 19 points and 18 rebounds as the San Jose State women's basketball team defeated the Seattle University Redhawks 74-65 in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) action on Walt McPherson Court.

The Spartans (9-12, 6-4 WAC) held the Redhawks, the conference's top shooting team at 42 percent, to just 29.4 percent on the night while hitting 38 percent of their own shots.

"Our plan was to clog up the middle and make sure they didn't get any easy buckets," said Byrd. "If they were going to beat us it was going to be from the outside."

The Spartans led 66-64 with 2:03 to play.  Ta'Rea Cunnigan, who finished with 19 points, scored the team's final eight, hitting six-straight free throws and capping the night with a steal and layup with four seconds left for the 74-65 victory.

San Jose State out scored Seattle U. 46-to-28 in the paint and held the Redhawks to 14-for-42 (33 percent) shooting around the bucket.  They did allow a career-high 24 points from guard Daidra Brown.

"We were determined to keep (Kacie) Sowell and their front line players from beating us," said head coach Tim La Kose. "Riana (Byrd) and Emily (Schill) did a great job on defense, but this was a complete team defensive effort.  We let Brown shoot and she scored, but we executed out game plan and came away with the win."

The teams played nearly identical first periods and came out of the locker room for the second half tied 35-35.  Seattle grabbed a 39-37 lead just over two minutes in to the second half, but the Spartans came right back with five points, three from Emily Schill and two from Cunnigan to lead 42-39.

The Spartans pushed their advantage to a game-high 11 points, 64-53 with 4:22 left, but an 11-to-3 Seattle U. run over the next three minutes left San Jose State ahead 67-64 before Cunnigan's final eight points ended the game.

San Jose State, winners of four straight home games for the first time since the 2005-06 season, host the Idaho Vandals on Saturday afternoon.  Tip off in The Event Center is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
