Spartans Topped By Aggies On The Road

January 29, 2011

Logan, UT----A second half run landed the Spartans within just eight points from Utah State, but San Jose State eventually ran out of gas losing the contest 72-57.

"I'm proud of the kids for fighting back and getting themselves back into the game," said head coach Pam DeCosta. "But you can't get down 24 points, that's a hard deficit to come back from."

The Aggies (10-10, 4-3 WAC) held the 35-22 advantage at halftime and led by as much as 24 points, 55-31, with 12:08 remaining. The Spartans (2-18, 2-5 WAC) rallied and pulled within eight points on a 15-4 run starting with 7:43 remaining, beginning with a Marnesha Hall trey and ending at 2:49 on a Myesha Broaden layup, and San Jose State found itself trailing 64-56.

San Jose State's comback eventually ended and the Aggies held off the rally by limiting the Spartans to only one point from there on out and hit 6-of-8 at the free throw line during that same span to seal the win.

The Spartans shot 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field, which tied their season-best.  As a team San Jose State notched 16 assists and 12 steals, both season records for the team.

Four Spartans finished the night in double-figures, led with Sara Plavljanin's 15 points. Both Sayja Sumler and Hall tallied 12 points and AJ Newton chipped in with 10 points. Sumler grabbed a game-high nine boards while Plavljanin added seven boards, as the Spartans had a 36-28 rebounding advantage.

As a team Utah State shot 26-of-48 (54.2%).  Devyn Christensen's 18 points was good for a game-high and Banna Diop scored 16 points. Amber White led the Aggies with five boards.

Next up, San Jose State heads north to face the Vandals of Idaho on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m.
