San Jose, Calif. -- San José State women's basketball player Jasmine Smith, who had back-to-back double doubles in the team's two wins last week, was named the Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday morning. The announcement came from the Conference office in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Smith, a native of Burbank, Calif., averaged 18.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the team's 81-80 overtime win over San Diego State last Wednesday and its 86-74 victory over Air Force on Saturday. The senior forward shot 68.0 percent (17-of-25) for the week.
Against SDSU, Smith shot 63.6 percent (7-of-11) scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds with one blocked shot and one steal. Then against the Falcons, she posted her second double-double of the week with 23 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the field. She also had four steals in that game.
Smith has recorded a double double in each of the team's five conference games and is the only player in the Mountain West to record a double double in every league game this year. Her current double double streak is at six games and overall she has seven double doubles this year.
This is Smith's first Mountain West Player of the Week honor and the third for a Spartan this season.
San Jose State's next game is Wednesday, January 18 at Wyoming. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (MT).
