San Jose State Drops WAC Opener

January 6, 2011

San Jose, Calif.----The San Jose State women's basketball team evened the score 16-16 early, but couldn't deliver on its offense in a 69-34 loss to Louisiana Tech at The Event Center on Thursday, January 6.

The Spartans (0-14, 0-1 WAC) drop their first conference game of the 2010-11 season, while the Lady Techsters (9-5, 1-0 WAC) take a two-game win streak.

After trailing 8-2 in the first five minutes of play, San Jose State's decisive run came at 14:51 remaining, going on a 14-8 run to tie the score 16-16 with 6:35 left. Lousiana Tech's Angie Felton would end the Spartans' offensive spark with a two-point jumper at the 6:21 mark. The Lady Techsters never relinquished the lead, going into the locker room at half with a 27-18 advantage.

San Jose State was paced by Myesha Broaden's 12 points, while Sara Plavljanin notched 10. Marisa Williams grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. The Spartans were held to 27.3% shooting (12-of-44) from the floor, 2-of-10 from three-point range, and made 8-of-16 at the free throw line for 50.0%.

Adrienne Johnson led the Lady Techsters with 16 points. Kiara Young grabbed 10 boards.

The Lady Techsters made sure there was no doubt of the outcome by starting the second half on a 20-3 run and with 11:00 remaining the score was 48-21. Plavljanin would score seven of her 10 points in the second half, but that was not enough to keep the Spartans on pace, shooting 29.4% from the floor to the Lady Techsters 51.5% in the second half.

"It was a tale of two halves. We came out in the first half and followed the game plan. We came out in the second half flat and with no fire," stated head coach Pam DeCosta. "We have had problems scoring and when we didn't score at the start of the second half we let-down mentally and stopped playing."

The Spartans will host the Aggies of New Mexico State on Saturday, January 8 at The Event Center. Tip-off is scheduled at 5:00 p.m. Following the women's game the San Jose State men's basketball team will host Idaho at 7:30 p.m.
