Spartans Fall Short Against Rival Santa Clara

January 2, 2011

San Jose, Calif.----San Jose State couldn't find its shot in the second half, scoring just 12 points in a 44-37 loss to Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon at The Event Center.  The Spartans fall to 0-13 overall, while the Broncos improve to 4-10.

"We did pretty well the first half, but the problem for us was we got tired," stated head coach Pam DeCosta.  "We came out in the second half and made mental mistakes."

San Jose State went on a 12-2 run to open the game and built-up a 17-6 lead at 8:30.  Santa Clara never led during the first 20 minutes of action and the Spartans held a 25-23 edge at half.

AJ Newton led the Spartans in first-half scoring with 13 points, five rebounds and went 4-of-4 from the line.

Santa Clara's first lead, 29-28, came with 13:30 left on a long 3 from Ricky Radanovich.  San Jose State answered with a 7-2 run to lead 35-31 with 9:48 to play, capped by a lay up from Liz Johnson. The Spartans would manage just two points over the final 9:48.

"The one thing I was very pleased with was our defense and how we held Santa Clara to 30 percent shooting," added DeCosta.  "But we need to shoot better and put both offense and defense together.  We have learned a lot and hopefully we will get some players back for conference.  These kids want it bad and it will click."

San Jose State's leading scorer Brittany Johnson did not suit up due to a knee injury versus Mount Saint Mary's on December 29.

Newton tallied a Spartan-high 18 points and Marisa Williams grabbed seven boards.

Radanovich finished with 19 points and four 3's, both season-highs for the Santa Clara guard.

The Spartans will open conference play at home as they welcome Western Athletic Conference foe Louisiana Tech on Thursday, January 6 at The Event Center. Tip-off is scheduled at 5:00 p.m. Following the women's game the San Jose State men's basketball team will host Boise State at 7:30 p.m.
