Laramie, Wyo. - Every member of the San José State women's basketball team was in the scoring column, led by Rebecca Woodberry's 18 points, but three Wyoming Cowgirls scored 79 of their team's 103 points and won 103-80 on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West matchup.
"We got a split on the road and that is what's most important right now," head coach Jamie Craighead said. "I was happy with the fact that everyone contributed and we battled the entire game."
Woodberry hit three of her first four shots, all 3-pointers, on her way to four treys in the first half. She moved into second place on the single season 3-pointers list with 73 and is one away from tying Kari Steele's single-season record of 74 set in 1996-97.
"I was feeling it in the first half," said Woodberry also who moved into 10th place on the Spartans career 3-point list passing Megan Gluhan (1998-2000). "My looks in the second half weren't as good, but I should have made a couple of more."
Wyoming's (17-6, 8-4 MW) Kayla Woodward had 20 of her game-high 29 points in the first half. Fallon Lewis finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Woodward had 10 rebounds in addition to her offensive output.
For the game the Spartans were 31-for-81 (38 percent) from the field. Wyoming was 34-for-67 (51 percent), and both team's made 11 3-pointers. The difference was that Wyoming went to the line 33 times and made 24, while San José State was 7-for-10.
The Cowgirls, who led the entire game, jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first minute. The run was started by a 3-pointer from Kaitlyn Mileto who finished with 24 points. Woodberry then drained a pair of threes to steady the Spartans and stop Wyoming's momentum.
Ta'Rea Cunningan, who finished with 14 points, hit a layup at 15:43 to play in the half to tie the game 13-13.
The teams went back and forth for the next two minutes. Riana Byrd, who was 4-for-8 from the field, scored nine points and grabbed six boards, hit a layup to tied the game 19-19.
The margin remained in single digits until a Marquelle Dent layup with 7:26 to go before half time gave Wyoming a 38-28 lead. They pushed the advantage to 18 point lead, 59-41, at the half.
When Paris Baird hit a 3-pointer with 13:35 to play in the game the lead was down to 12 points at 68-56. The Cowgirls pushed it back to 16 points before Britta Hall, who was 3-for-6 from long range and finished with 11 points, drained a three and sunk a pair of free throws to narrow the gap to 11 points with 9:01 to play, 78-67.
The Spartans could get no closer and Wyoming built its largest lead, 23 points with 4:09 to play and won by the same margin, 103-80.
