Cross Country Celebrates At Annual Awards Banquet

The San Jose State University men and women's cross country teams held their annual end-of-the-year awards banquet on Sunday, December 11.

Accomplishments by the student-athletes during the 2011 season were recognized alongside Spartans' head coach Augie Argabright, who retired following the completion of his 18th season at the helm.

Megan Arias, Talia Gragert, Kate Lambdin, Sasha Martinez, Elizabeth Raymond and Victoria Smith all earned their fourth career letters with the Spartans and were recipients of the Senior Award.

Antonio Cantu, Alex Esparza, Sterling Granger and Juan Ruiz were the senior honorees on the men's side.

Freshman Aylin Mejia walked away with this year's women's MVP Award. Mejia competed in five races in 2011 and was the Spartans' top-finisher in four of them. Her highlights included three top-25 finishes including a victory at the Battle of the Bay (9/3).

Rebecca Garcia, also a freshman, won the Spartan Award for overall dedication during the season. She competed in five races including the WAC Championship and had a top-finish of seventh at the Battle of the Bay.

"Becca was always right up there with the top times this year and it was because of her hard work," said Argabright.

Ruiz was named the men's MVP after recording two top-25 finishes and one top-ten in 2011. He finished eighth at the Battle of the Bay and followed that with a 24th place finish out of 139 runners at the UC Riverside Invitational. Ruiz was also the Spartans' top-finisher at the WAC Championship.

The Spartan men's team senior captain Sterling Granger was the recipient of the Spartan award for his dedication in 2011.  He finished inside the top-20 two times including 12th at the Battle of the Battle of the Bay and 18th at the UC Riverside Invitational.

"Sterling was a great all-around Spartan," said Argabright. He was a great competitor, always good in the classroom and had a great presence with the team."
