Haefele Named Men's Cross Country Most Valuable

David Haefele, who was San Jose State University’s top finisher in five of seven meets in the 2008 season, was named the Most valuable Runner at the annual cross country post-season awards banquet.

The junior from Orange, Calif., was one of two Spartans to post a pair of top-20 finishes during the season. He was 19th in the season-opening USF Invitational in San Francisco and 12th at the San Francisco State Invitational in October.

Haefele also was the first San Jose State runner to cross the finish line at the Memphis Classic, Stanford Invitational and the WAC Championship.

Freshman Cameron Duran received the team’s Newcomer Award. The first-year competitor from San Jose’s Evergreen Valley High ran in five meets and posted times under 30:00 four times. His best finish was 31st at the USF Invitational.

Sophomore Alan Shelton took home the Spartan Award given to the team member who combines outstanding academic achievements with top performances in practice and competition.
