Heard, Martinez pace Spartans at WAC Cross Country Championships

TULSA, Okla. - Matthew Heard and Anna Martinez were the top finishers for
the San Jose State University men's and women's cross country teams at the
Western Athletic Conference championships, held today at Tulsa's Mohawk

Heard finished 12th overall in the men's race, while Martinez placed
seventh overall in the women's race.

The Spartans finished seventh in the team standings in both the men's and
women's meets. San Jose State scored 132 points in the men's meet and 154
points in the women's meet.

Heard completed the 8,000 meter men's course in 26:36. Trevor Marca
finished 14th overall in 26:46. Jason Blair came in 32nd overall in 28:10,
Will Crane finished 37th in 28:37, and Erik Wackenstedt was 39th overall in
28:46. Robby Phillip placed 43rd (29:15) and David Leon came in 47th

Martinez improved by one place in the individual standings from last year's
conference meet, recording a time of 18:35 on the 5,000 meter course. She
has finished in the top 10 in all seven meets the Spartans have competed in
this season.

Janina Crain finished 20th overall in 19:16. Megan Stone placed 36th
overall in 20:03. Kimberly Nebeker came in 40th in 20:11, and Rebekah
Harmer placed 51st in 21:06. The other three runners for San Jose State
were Janet Yiu (55th in 21:15), Janette Najera (58th in 21:27) and Laurel
Stender (60th in 21:51).

The Spartan men's and women's teams will both compete at the Western
Regional Championships, set for Saturday, Nov. 11 in Fresno, Calif.
