Men's Cross Country Take Fifth At WAC Championship

Logan, Utah --  The San Jose State men’s cross country team finished in fifth place at the WAC Championship on Saturday, October 27.  A total of eight Spartan runners set new career 8K times in one of the best performances by the SJSU men this season.

After being predicted to finished tied for sixth-place in the pre-championship coaches poll, the Spartan men easily captured fifth place in a race that feature two nationally ranked schools in Idaho and Utah State.  SJSU placed three runners in the top-25, and five runners in the top-30.  In the 2006 WAC Championship, the Spartans only placed two in the top-30.

After not having a runner finish under 26 minutes in all of 2006 and 2007, the Spartans placed six runners under 26 minutes, including one under 25 minutes in one of the best races for the SJSU men this season.

Chris Hart led the Spartans with an 18th place finish.  With a time of 24:43:97, the senior shattered his previous 8K best by 1:23.  For the second consecutive race, Hart has led the Spartans after a 65th place finish at the Santa Clara Invitational on October 13.  Hart becomes the first Spartan to finish under 25 minutes since 2002.

David Haefele (25:03.39) beat his career best time on the way to a 23rd place finish, while Luke Galvan (25:09.94) rounded out the top-25.  Haefele and Galvan both beat their 8K career-best by over a minute.

Sean Dundon (25:17.27), Sam Wambugu (25:22.80), and Rigoberto Vasquez (25:40.98), all finished under the 26 minute mark.

Jonathan Gragert clocked in at 26:23.92 to finish 43rd, while Gordie Throne and David Blausey set career marks with times of 26:42.35 and 27:08.39, finishing 49th and 50th, respectively.

Overall, head coach, Augie Argabright, was pleased with the outcome, “The men’s team did a great job.  The competition was tough this year, but (Chris) Hart did a great job for the team.”

Utah State took the team title, placing four runners in the top-five, while Seth Wold of Utah State earned the WAC cross country “Athlete of the Year” after finishing first with a time of 23:16:63.

The next race for the Spartans will be the NCAA Regional in Eugene, Oregon, on November 10.  SJSU will battle with local rival, Santa Clara, for two points in the annual “Rivalry Series.”
