Heard leads men's cross country team to third place finish

BELMONT, Calif.-----Matt Heard placed first in the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Crystal Springs. The Spartans placed third overall as a team. Santa Clara won the race and was awarded two points in the San Jose State-Santa Clara rivalry series.

The Spartans had a team total of 67 points, placing third. Santa Clara won the race with 37, while Fullerton placed second with 49 points in the 8,000 meter race.

“This was a tremendous race for Matt Heard and Jesse McLeod,” said head coach Augie Argabright. “I’m really happy with their performance. Santa Clara and Fullerton are two outstanding teams, and we ran well against them.”

Senior Matt Heard won the race, finishing with a time of 25:52. Junior Jesse McLeod also ran well, placing fourth with a time of 26:02. Will Crane, Angel Hernandez and David Leon all finished in the top-30.

“I think that the team is very prepared for the WAC Championships,” commented Argabright. “They get better every race.”

The Spartans will head to Dallas, Texas on November 2, for the WAC Cross Country Championships.
