PALO ALTO, Calif.-----The San Jose State University men’s cross country team failed to place a runner in the top-50 in the 30-team event. The Spartans finished 26th overall in the Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course, on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The Spartans had a team total of 744 on the 8,000 meter course. The University of New Mexico captured first place with a score of 61. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo finished second with 66, and Stanford placed third with a score of 84.

Senior Matt Heard was the top Spartan finisher, placing 54th with a time of 25:20. Junior David Leon placed 150th (27:10). Senior Will Crane and junior Jesse McLeod, two prominent runners for the Spartans, did not finish the race, due to injuries.

"Although we did not place as high as we had hoped, it was still a good experience," commented Heard. "It was good practice because we will be running the same course for the season-ending West Regionals."

The Spartans will have a chance at a better finish at the Gator Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 5, in San Francisco.
