Men's cross country take eighth at Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose State University men’s cross country team finished in eighth place at the Santa Clara 8K Bronco Invitational on Saturday October 14.  Samuel Wambugu led the Spartans with a time of 25:31.00, to earn his first top-25 finish as a Spartan.

The Spartan newcomers continue to shine, led by Wambugu, who beat his 8K personal best by over two minutes to finish in 25th place.  Jonathan Gragert set a new personal best with a time of 26:05.00, to take 41st place, while David Haefele also set a personal best with a time of 26:12.00, to finish in 45th place.  In the five of the six races of 2006, a Spartan newcomer has been the top SJSU finisher.

For most of the Spartan runners it was the third race in as many weeks, as they prepare for the WAC Championships in two weeks.  Although running in three consecutive weekends is a tough, head coach, Augie Argabright feels it will help, “Running for three straight weekends is tough to do, but they gained valuable experience going into the WAC Championship, so I was pleased today.”

Stanford won the team competition, as well as the individual competition, led by Forrest Tahdooahnippa’s time of 23:56.00.  Although the Spartans faced Santa Clara on their home course, the results will not count towards the official “Rivalry Series” between the Spartans and Broncos.  The winner of the two rivalry series points will be determined at the NCAA Regional meet in Portland, Ore. on November 11, where both teams will meet on a neutral course.

Next up for the Spartans is the WAC Championships on October 28th in Fresno, Calif.  In the 2005 WAC Championships, the Spartans took fifth place, led by Mobin Ghoury’s seventh place finish.
