Spartan Men Run At Notre Dame Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. --  The San Jose State University men’s cross country team finished 22nd at the Notre Dame Invitational on September 28.  One of the largest and oldest cross country meets in the nation, the Notre Dame Invitational featured 25 men’s teams, including six nationally ranked schools.

For the second consecutive week, Sam Wambugu has been the top Spartan finisher, with a time of 26:50.00.  Wambugu finished 109th in the five mile race that featured over 200 runners.  Dating back to the 2006 Notre Dame Invitational where he finished in 69th place, the senior from Kenya has been the top Spartan finisher in five of the last seven races.

With a time of 26:51.00, Sean Dundon tied his top five-mile time, which he previously set at the 2006 Notre Dame Invitational.  Dundon finished three places behind Wambugu, coming in at 112th place.

Freshmen, Luke Galvan and Rigoberto Vasquez followed with times of 27:14.00 and 27:42.00 to finish 135th and 158th, while Chris Hart broke the 27-minute barrier with a time of 27:53.

Running in such a highly competitive race, the Spartans continue to gain valuable experience that will pay dividends in upcoming WAC championship. Of the seven Spartan runners, five were either freshmen or sophomores.

Along with SJSU in the “Gold” race, Grand Valley State University took the team title, while Nate Peck of Grand Valley State was the top finisher in the “Gold” race with a time of 24:25.00.
