Men's Cross Country Second In Season Opener

Crystal Springs, Calif. -- The San Jose State men's cross country team finished in second out of seven teams in the 2011 Battle of the Bay Cross Country Invitational in Crystal Springs, Calif., on September 3.

The Spartans finished second to San Francisco State who won the invitational with a team score of 25.

Freshman Mueen Ghoury was the San Jose State's top finisher, coming in second place (21:48), twenty seconds behind the winner Cristian Soratos of Hartnell College.

"Mueen came right in for us and had a great race," said Spartans' head coach Augie Argabright. "He ran very well today and put himself in position to compete for first place."

Juan Ruiz finished next for San Jose State in eighth place (22:24) followed by team captain Sterling Granger in 12th place (22:43).

Ansel Mills finished in 14th place (22:56) and Kellen Cole came in 18th place (23:14) to round out the top-five the Spartans.

"We had a good performance as a team today," said Argabright. "We're excited that the season is finally underway."

San Jose State's next race is on September 17 at the UC Riverside Invitational.
