Belmont, Calif.---The San Jose State men's cross country team won it all by a landslide after nearly putting up a perfect team score in the "Battle of the Bay" meet on September 4.
The Spartans winning score of 17 was nearly 50 points higher than second place team, De Anza College with 66.
Alfredo Coronado (21:06) finished in first place overall, and was followed by his teammates Sterling Granger (22:08), Irvin Garcia (22:14) and Alan Shelton (22:27) in spots two through four.
Coronado's time of 21:06 won the race by 58 seconds over his teammate Granger, and finished 1:45 ahead of the first non-SJSU competitor. This was Coronado's fourth top-ten finish as a Spartan dating back to 2009, and his first career individual title.
"Alfredo simply dominated the race today," said head coach Augie Argabright. "He pulled away from the pack after the first mile, and never looked back."
Hector Lopez-Garcia (23:19) and Juan Ruiz (23:22) finished in eighth and tenth place as individuals, and despite their top-ten performances, were not factored into San Jose State's team score.
"This race is a great confidence booster for all of us as a team," said Argabright. "You could tell by the way this team performed that they have been dedicated over the summer, and are ready to run hard in 2010."
Men's cross country will be on their feet again in the UC Riverside Invitational in Riverside, Calif., on Saturday, September 18.
