Five Spartan men set personal bests in first cross country meet of the season

BREA, Calif.-----Five runners set personal bests as the San Jose State University men's cross country team placed 10th in the CS Fullerton Invitational at Carbon Canyon Regional Park on Saturday, Aug. 31.

The Spartans had a team total of 275 in the 8,000 meter course. Stanford placed first with a total of 17. Coming in second was Cal Coast TC with 74, followed by UCLA with 125.

"I was happy with our performance, especially with Matt Heard," head coach Augie Argabright stated. "Starting the season with several athletes having personal best times is a good sign. Hopefully they will continue to improve as a team."

Senior Matt Heard was the top finisher for the Spartans, placing 26th with a personal best time of 26:06.2. Senior Will Crane was the second Spartan finisher, placing 66th with his personal best time of 26:54.0. Also recording their personal best times were juniors Jesse McLeod (27:23.0) and David Leon (27:43.0) and freshman Ray Avalos (28:16.0).

The team returns to action, Saturday, September 7, at the University of California Invitational.
