Men's Cross Country places second at California Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif.-----The San Jose State University men's cross country team finished second to California on Saturday, Sept. 7. Senior Matt Heard placed third overall.

The Spartans competed in the dual meet, finishing with a team total of 41 points. California scored 19 on the four-mile course.

"This was the first time our team has traveled to Berkeley," noted head coach Augie Argabright. "For not trying the course before, I thought we did really well. I thought our athletes looked really good. Matt and Will ran well, breaking up their top five runners, and Jesse McLeod seems to be getting stronger at every race."

Senior Matt Heard was the top finisher for the Spartans, placing third, with a time of 20:25, just 12 seconds behind California's Martin Conrad. "We did really well," commented Heard. "We got second place, but we still did really well. We will see Cal next weekend, so we were able to get a good feel for how they run."

Senior Will Crane and junior Jesse McLeod also finished in the top-10. Crane finished sixth, with a time of 20:48, while McLeod placed ninth, with a time of 21:41.

The team returns to action, Saturday, September 14, at the University of San Francisco Invitational.
