SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.-----Among tough competition, the San Jose State University men's cross country team tied with Santa Clara University to place third at the USF Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. Runners Jesse McLeod, Will Crane and Matt Heard all finished in the top-10.

The Spartans placed third, tying Santa Clara University with a group total of 64 points in the four-mile race at Golden Gate Park. San Jose State had three runners in the top eight, while Santa Clara only placed one. California won the meet with 46, followed by Sacramento State with 50 points.

"This is the first time we've had three men in the top eight in a race of this size," commented head coach Augie Argabright.

Junior Jesse McLeod led the Spartans, placing fourth overall, with a time of 21:23. Seniors Will Crane and Matt Heard placed sixth (21:28) and eighth (21:31), respectively. Coach Augabright noted that this was McLeod's best finish at a collegiate competition.

"The whole team ran well," said McLeod. "Everyone came through really strong. It was definitely exciting to place how we did. I think the team seems pretty confident going into the Stanford Invitational."

The Spartans are set to race again Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Stanford Invitational.
