Men's Water Polo Wins 10-9 Over Santa Clara To Start 2016 Season

Santa Clara, Calif.-- The San Jose State men's water polo started the 2016 victorious with a 10-9 win at Santa Clara Saturday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.

All 10 Spartan goals were scored by freshmen, led by Ivan Stefanovic who topped all scorers with five goals, followed by Luka Scepanovic with three and Ashley Castle and Ben Hauschild with one each.

San Jose State jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after the first quarter.  Scepanovic scored two goals in the quarter.  Santa Clara responded in the second quarter with a 4-2 goal output and tying the match at 5-5 at halftime.

The Spartans got three goals in the third period, including two from Stefanovic, to take an 8-7 lead into the final period.  Both teams scored two goals in the fourth quarter.  Hauschild gave the Spartans the lead for good at 9-8 with just over five minutes remaining.  Stefanovic put SJSU up two goals at 10-8 with 4:11 left in the match.  Santa Clara got within one at 10-9 at the 1:56 mark, but neither team scored the rest of the match.

The Spartans next match will be next Saturday, September 10, when the team plays at UC Davis beginning at 2 p.m.
