Men's Soccer Closes Out Season With Win

Sacramento, Calif.    The San Jose State University men’s soccer team closed out the 2007 season with a 1-0 win at Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon.  Leading the way for the Spartans on offense was sophomore Nick Cukar with the game-winning goal in the first half.  The Spartans finish the 2007 season with a 10-9-0 overall record and a 5-5-0 conference mark while the Hornets close out 2007 with a 4-13-2 overall mark and a 3-6-1 conference posting.

Cukar scored the game-winning goal at the 40:40 mark of the first half with help from senior Julio Gonzalez.  Cukar collected the pass from Gonzalez, dribbled around the defender and blasted the ball into the lower left corner of the Hornets’ goal. 

Lewis Sweeney was stellar in goal for the Spartans, making four saves on the day.  The junior goalkeeper finished the season with a 6-4-0 record, including three shutouts.

Senior Ismael Ibarra, in the last game of his collegiate career, was an offensive force for the Spartans, tallying five shots.  The forward had several close shots, including a late one at the 88:51 mark of the game that hit off the post and bounced out.

The teams were even on shots with 14 each.  The Spartans took seven shots in each half and Cukar was one of only two San Jose State players to tally a shot on goal.  The sophomore finished with the game-winner and two other shots on Sacramento State’s Ryan Kenny.  Senior Savio Carrijo was the second Spartan to shoot on goal, notching an attempt at 89:52.

The Spartans conclude the 2007 season with a 10-9-0 overall record and a 5-5-0 conference mark.  The four seniors who concluded their careers in blue and gold were Gonzalez, Ibarra, Carrijo and Jacob Morrison
