Diaz named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Player of the Week

Woodland, Calif.---San Jose State senior forward Nelson Diaz (San Francisco, CA; City College of San Francisco) and New Mexico senior defender Matt Wootton (Colleyville, TX; Colleyville Heritage HS) share this week’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Brine Player of the Week award for their leadership in their teams’ victories this past weekend.

Diaz scored both goals in the Spartans’ 2-1 win. In doing so, he recorded his ninth and tenth goals of the season, to go along with three assists for a team-leading 23 points. After getting down 1-0 to a tough Hornet team that had never lost at home in 2005 before Sunday, Diaz showed resolve and lead the Spartan offense the rest of the game. He has recorded five game-winning goals for a Spartan team that has only lost on the road once this season and was never defeated in games that went to overtime.

Diaz joins freshman defender Ed Brand and junior forward Ismael Ibarra as the third Spartan to achieve MPSF Brine Player of the Week honors in 2005. Brand was selected on Oct. 31 and Ibarra was selected on Oct. 17.

Wootton led the Lobos to a critical pair of 1-0 shutouts over Denver and Air Force last weekend to secure UNM’s second-consecutive MPSF men’s soccer championship and the Federation’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament.
