Sacramento, Calif.—Frank Mata scored the game-winning goal and assisted on the Spartans’ first goal as the San Jose State men’s soccer team defeated San Diego State, 2-1, Friday evening in a semi-final match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship.

The Spartans (11-6-2) scored first in the match as Frank Sanfilippo scored off a Mata cross at 37:02. The Spartans took six shots in the first half compared to only three by the Aztecs.

Mata led the scoring attack again in the second half, this time scoring the game-winning goal. Johnny Gonzales took the ball down the right side of the field and crossed the ball to Mata who scored at 53:01. Both Mata and Sanfilippo scored their first goals of the season in this match.

San Diego State then scored at 35:27 as Raul Baptiste headed the ball by Spartan keeper Tyler Tratten. Baptiste headed the ball in off a direct pass from Kenny Fechner.

The Aztecs had two scoring chances in the last five minutes of the match. Andrew DiCicco and goalie Colin Hanke each took shots on goal that were saved by Tratten.

San Jose State advances to the championship match of the MPSF Tournament on Sunday. The Spartans will face #2 New Mexico, who defeated Air Force 5-1 earlier Friday.
