Men's Soccer: Top-Ranked Spartans To Host Two-Time Defending Champion Indiana In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

This week
San Jose State University will host Indiana University on Saturday, Nov. 18 in a first round game of the NCAA Tournament. The game will be played at Buck Shaw Stadium on the campus of Santa Clara University. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

San Jose State received an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships. Indiana was awarded an at-large berth.

San Jose State is 20-0-1 overall, the only undefeated NCAA Division 1 men's soccer team. Indiana, the two-time defending NCAA Division 1 champion, is 13-6-0 overall.

The Spartans are 2-0 on neutral sites this season, while Indiana has a 2-2 record on neutral locations.

Series record
Indiana has won the only previous meeting between the two teams, a 1-0 victory on Sept. 22, 1978 in San Jose.

NCAA Tournament history
San Jose State is making its 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The last appearance for the Spartans was in 1998, when San Jose State lost to Stanford in the first round, 3-2 in three overtimes. The best finish for a San Jose State team was in 1968, when the Spartans lost in the semifinals. In its 19 tournament games, the Spartans have scored 37 goals and allowed 46. San Jose State has a 7-12 record in NCAA Tournament games.

Spartans win MPSF Championships
San Jose State won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship with a 1-0 victory over UC Irvine on Friday and a 3-2 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.

Isaias Bardales scored the only goal in the 28th minute in Friday's win. Bardales scored on a chip shot from 18 yards out after receiving a pass from Ryan Suarez.

On Saturday San Jose State rallied from a 2-1 deficit for the victory. Jorge Martinez scored the game-winning goal with a header at the 86:20 mark, with assists to Suarez and Frank Sanfilippo. Suarez threw in the ball from the left sideline, with Sanfilippo heading the ball to Martinez.

Spartans set victory record
With the two wins at the MPSF Championships San Jose State set a school record for wins in a season, with 20. The record old record of 19 was set in 1978, when the Spartans finished with a 19-3 mark.

Head Coach Gary St. Clair
Gary St. Clair is in his 11th season as the San Jose State head coach. With a record of 105-96-14 (.522), he is the second winningest coach in SJSU men's soccer history. St. Clair recorded his 100th career victory on Oct. 27, a 2-1 victory at Denver.
