FULLERTON, Calif. - Jorge Martinez scored on a header with 3:37 left in regulation to lift San Jose State to a 3-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the championship game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation playoffs.
The win gives San Jose State an automatic berth in the NCAA Playoffs. The Spartans' first-round opponent, site and game time will be announced Monday at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
The winning goal was scored when Ryan Suarez' throw-in was headed by Frank Sanfilippo to Martinez, who headed the ball past CSUF goalkeeper Josh Saunders from about two yards out.
The victory was the Spartans' 20th of the season, setting a school record for wins in a season. San Jose State is now 20-0-1 overall.
The Spartans rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit - the first time SJSU has trailed at halftime all-season.
San Jose State took a 1-0 lead at the 25:47 mark. After stealing the ball, Jorge Martinez passed to Isaias Bardales, whose shot from about 20 yards out found the right corner of the net. The goal was the 11th of the season for Bardales. Martinez registered his 11th assist.
Cal State Fullerton rallied with two goals in a 2:06 span. The Titans tied the score at the 30:48 mark on a goal by Duncan Oughton. Ray Ramirez then put the home team in front when he took a cross-field pass and scored on a 35-yard shot.
San Jose State tied the score in the 59th minute when a corner kick by Lars Lyssand curved into the goal. The goal was Lyssand's fifth of the season.
