Burgos Leads Men's Soccer To 3-1 Win Over UNLV

Las Vegas, Nev. Efrain Burgos, Jr. led the San Jose State University men’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Rebels of UNLV to snap the Spartans’ three-game slide.  Burgos notched two goals on the night, including one in the final minute of play to improve the Spartans’ record to 9-8-0 on the season and 4-4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.  The Rebels drop to 6-6-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the conference with the loss.

“The boys played great,” said head coach Gary St. Clair.  “We were 2-0 in the first half and we did exactly what we had to do.  I couldn’t be more pleased with their performance.”

Burgos notched the game-winning goal just as time expired in the first half to give San Jose State a 2-0 lead.  The freshman tallied his fourth goal of the season on a free kick awarded after a UNLV foul.  The aggressive Rebels were called for 10 fouls in the first half.

The Spartans earned the early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Nick Cukar at 10:28 in the first half.  Cukar’s fifth goal of the season was a header off a well-placed serve on a free kick by junior Gavin Wenyon

The Rebels cut the lead in half late in the game with a goal by Lamar Neagle at the 86:56 mark of the game.  Neagle’s goal came on a penalty kick following a San Jose State foul in the box.

Burgos added an insurance goal for the Spartans in the final minute of play on a shot to the far post off a run.  The forward took a total of six shots in the game, the most on either team.  Also attacking on offense for the Spartans was senior Ismael Ibarra with three shots.  Ibarra had a late opportunity with a shot that hit the post at 87:10.

In goal for San Jose State was Lewis Sweeney.  The junior keeper made six saves for the Spartans and allowed just one goal.  Calvin Bailey made three saves for the Rebels.

San Jose State will be back in action again on Sunday, November 11 against the No. 22 Lobos of New Mexico.  The game is schedules for 1:00 p.m. on the New Mexico campus.
