Men's soccer closes regular season with 2-1 overtime loss at Cal

Berkeley, Calif.----Yohei Fukuda scored at 3:16 of the first overtime giving the University of California a 2-1 overtime win over San Jose State University in a non-conference men’s soccer match at Edwards Stadium.

Fukuda’s second goal of the season capped a Golden Bear second-half comeback. Cal (9-8-2) trailed 1-0 after San Jose State’s Randy Poggio opened the scoring with a goal off a Frank Sanfilippo assist at 54:22. Poggio scored his 13th goal of the season.

Cal, which outshot San Jose State, 21-5 and took the only two shots in overtime, tied the game at the 62:26 mark as Kyle Navarro, who would later assist on Fukuda’s goal, took a cross from Carl Acosta and headed the ball into the Spartans’ net.

Tyler Tratten of San Jose State was credited with seven saves. California goalkeeper Mike Oseguera made four saves.

San Jose State (10-6-2) finished the regular season losing its last two games. The Spartans played four overtime games and came away with just two ties.

San Jose State returns to action Friday, November 14, in a semifinal round game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer tournament hosted by Cal State Sacramento.
