Sanchez, Murphy, Salceda Earn All-MPSF Honors

Albuquerque, N.M. - Three San Jose State men's soccer players have been recognized by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) for their play throughout the 2012 season.

Steven Sanchez, Nick Murphy and Jonathan Salceda were honored with first-team, second team and honorable mention selections, respectively.

Sanchez, a senior striker and second-team All-MPSF selection last season, led the Spartans (8-8-1, 5-4-1 MPSF) with 50 shots, 20 on frame, nine goals and three game-winners.  He also had two assists for a team leading 20 points. In the MPSF is tied for second in game winning goals, is third in total goals and points and fourth in shots.  Nationally, Sanchez is in the top-100 in goals (44th), goals per game (51st), total points (68th) and points per game (70th).  His 27th minute game-winning strike against Houston Baptist (10/28) clinched an MPSF tournament bid for the Spartans and among his 17 career tallies, 10 have been game winners.  The 2012 team captain is one of three players to have started all 17 matches this year.

Murphy is a senior center back and team captain who has made 74 consecutive starts and anchored the Spartans defense for his four seasons in San Jose.  Earlier this week he was named a Capital One Academic All-District VII first-team selection and is up for Academic All-America honors, with a 3.93 GPA in Physics.  In 2010 he earned honorable mention All-MPSF selection.

Salceda emerged this season as a true scoring threat for the Spartans.  The junior striker has made 13 starts

and appeared in all 17 matches. He leads the team in assists (6) and is second in goals (6), points (18), shots (28) and shots on goal (16).  He is 56th in assists, 78th in assists per game, 91st in points per game and 92nd in total points nationally.  Among MPSF players he is tied for fifth in assists, sixth in points per game, tied for seventh in goals and eighth in points.  He scored two goals and assisted on two more in the Santa Clara (9/9) win and earned MPSF Player of the Week for the effort.  This is his first All-MPSF honor..

San Jose State is the fifth seed in the 2012 MPSF Men's Soccer Tournament and open tournament play on Thursday, November 8, against fourth seed Denver.  Kickoff for the quarterfinal match is set for 7:30 p.m. (MT) in Albuquerque, N.M.


CSU Bakersfield's Gyasi Zardes was named the 2012 MPSF Player of the Year, New Mexico's Ben McKendry is the conference's Freshman of the Year and Air Force head coach Doug Hill is the Coach of the Year.
