Stanford Scored Four Goals in Second Half to Defeat Spartan Men's Soccer Team

San Jose—Stanford scored four of its five goals within 7:30 of each other to defeat San Jose State, 5-1, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Spartan Soccer Field.

San Jose State opened the scoring with a goal at 38:42. Dylan Pender headed in the ball off a pass from Tim McKinney and a throw-in from Frank Mata. The Spartans got seven shots in the first period but were limited to three in the second half.

Stanford then went on a scoring spree. Cardinal Marcus Ryan scored the first Stanford goal at 42:50 to tie the match at 1-1 heading into halftime. He scored off a fast break off passes from Matt Janusz and Darren Fernandez.

The Cardinal came out quickly in the second half, scoring just 57 seconds into the half as Fernandez shot the ball off a Mike Wilson pass. Ryan then scored at 49:03 off a Spartan turnover and a pass from Fernandez. Janusz scored 1:08 later at 50:11 off a breakaway from Fernandez. Janusz ended the scoring by causing a Spartan turnover and scoring unassisted. Stanford outshot the Spartans 15-10, including 9-3 in the second half.

San Jose State fell to 10-5-2, while Stanford improved to 3-14-2. SJSU will play at California Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
