Murphy Earns Academic All-District VIII Honors

Austin, Texas - San Jose State's Nick Murphy, a junior defender on the men's soccer team, has earned first-team Capital One Academic All-District VIII honors as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) membership.  For Murphy, this is the second year he has been eligible for the distinction and the second time he has been so honored.

A native of San Francisco, Calif., the three-year starter from Lowell High has a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in physics. As one of 11 Academic All-District VIII award winners, Murphy advances to a national ballot as one of 88 candidates eligible for 2011 Academic All-America honors in men's soccer.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be enrolled at his/her current institution for at least one year, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, be a starter or key reserve, and have a minimum of sophomore athletics standing at his/her institution.

This year, Murphy is the only Spartan to start each of the teams 17 games and has played every minute.  He is one of five Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) players named to a 2011 Academic All-District team.

The Spartans (8-6-3, 5-4-0 MPSF) play at Sacramento State (8-7-2, 4-4-1 MPSF) on Saturday, November 5 to wrap up the MPSF regular season.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.   San Jose State will then begin preparations for the MPSF Championship Tournament which begins on November 10 at Ciber Field on the campus of Denver University in Denver, Colo.
