Men's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision In Overtime

San Jose, Calif. The San Jose State University men’s soccer team recorded its third straight overtime game on Sunday, November 4. The Spartans fell to the Pioneers of Denver, 2-1, following a hard-fought Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. The loss drops San Jose State’s record to 8-8-0 on the season and 3-4-0 in the conference while the Pioneers improve to 8-4-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the MPSF.

Both teams opened with goals midway through the first half. Denver took the early lead with a goal at the 19:45 mark. The Spartans responded a minute later with a goal by senior Ismael Ibarra on Senior Day at Spartan Stadium. Nick Cukar picked up the assist as he found a streaking Ibarra on the left side. Ibarra dribbled down the left side and blasted the ball into the top left corner to tie the game at 1-1.

The Pioneers and Spartans were scoreless through the remainder of the game. Denver was given a free opportunity to take the lead with a penalty kick early in the second half. Ryan Aweida took the shot for the Pioneers, but Sweeney made an outstanding diving save to his right to keep the game tied at 1-1.
