SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The San Jose State University men’s soccer team put on another defensive display and remain undefeated in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 2-0 win at San Diego State University Friday afternoon. The game marks the Spartans fifth consecutive victory.

The Spartan (9-7-0, 3-0-0 MPSF) defense took control in the second half led by senior defender Frank Sanfilippo. The defense held the Aztecs (4-10-1, 0-3-0 MPSF) to just four shots with no shots on goal in the second half, allowing the Spartan offense to attack the net.

"Frank (Sanfilippo) changes the complexion of the game," remarked San Jose State head coach Gary St. Clair. "His leadership and athleticism kept them out of the game in the second half. Without him we aren’t able to get those scoring opportunities."

The game remained scoreless until the 84th minute when the Spartans took the lead on freshman Johnny Gonzalez’ third goal of the season and second game winner. Gonzalez headed the ball in off a right cross from senior Tony Chang.

San Jose State added an insurance goal in the 89th minute when sophomore Frank Mata was able to breakaway at midfield and drive to the net.

The Spartans’ sophomore netminder Eddie Dominguez, recorded his first shutout of the season. Dominguez made five saves on 12 shots faced. The Aztecs’ Brian Barnes made five shaves on 17 shots faced in the loss.

San Jose State looks to remain undefeated in the MPSF when they face UNLV and last season’s conference champion New Mexico at home next weekend. The Spartans face UNLV Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and New Mexico on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Both games will be at Spartan Stadium as part of a double header with the women’s team.
