Towson, Md.---- San Jose State University sophomore Nick Murphy was named to the 2010 ESPN Academic All-District VIII men's soccer University Division first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) membership.
"There is certainly a reason and correlation that one of our captains on our team is a sophomore," explained head coach Gary St. Clair. "Along with his GPA, he's as good and reliable on the field, as he is off the field. That is why he is a co-captain."
A native of San Francisco, Calif., the two-year starter from Lowell High has a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average and is majoring in physics. As one of 11 Academic All-District VIII award winners, Murphy advances to a national ballot as one of 88 candidates eligible for 2010 Academic All-America honors in men's soccer.
"I had no idea it was coming," added Murphy. "My mom called me up and said I won an award. It's an honor and a pretty amazing feeling. I worked hard for it and hopefully I can continue this."
This season, Murphy is one of three Spartans to start in each of the first 18 games and leads the team with 1,634 minutes played.
In 2009, the defender was one of only three Spartans to play and start in all 20 matches. He led the team with 1,818 minutes on the field.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be enrolled at his/her current institution for at least one year, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, be a starter or key reserve, and have sophomore athletics standing at his/her institution.
Murphy is one of three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation players named to a 2010 Academic All-District team. He is the second Spartan men's soccer player in the last three years to garner Academic All-District accolades. Hiroki Akiyama earned the first-team All-District VIII distinction in 2008. District VIII covers schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, British Columbia and the Yukon.
Murphy and the Spartans (7-8-3, 1-5-3 MPSF) take on Sacramento State (6-4-7, 1-2-6 MPSF) on Saturday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. Saturday is Senior Night and concludes the regular season for San Jose State.
