Men's soccer celebrates Senior Night

San Jose, Calif. - Rodrigo Baptista, Chad Gleave, Daniel Perez, Patrick Scheufler and Diego Soto were recognized as the San Jose State University men's soccer program honored its seniors on Senior Night in the season finale against Sacramento State. The Hornets defeated the Spartans, 3-0.
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead at the 62:09 mark when Ryan Rhoads scored on an assist from Kurtis Lindsey on a nice give and go move into the penalty box. The goal was Rhoads' eighth of the season.
Sacramento State took a two-goal lead just 11 minutes later when Oscar Sandoval put a header just inside the near post past Baptista on a left crossing pass from Josh Zimbrich at the 73:11 mark. The Hornets got their third and final tally on the board on an own goal at 79:19.
The Spartans' best scoring chance came late in the second half when Perez had two chances inside the Hornet penalty box. Both shots were saved by Hornets goalkeeper Ryan Kenny. Sacramento State outshot the Spartans, 16-15 in the contest.
Baptista got into his final match just minutes into the second half when starting goalkeeper Richard Mann left the match due to a back injury suffered on a diving save.

The Spartans held strong in the second half, playing a man down the last 33 minutes of the match after Sam Shore was given a red card after tripping a Sacramento State player right outside the penalty box. Oscar Sandoval's ensuing penalty kick went just wide of the left post as the game remained scoreless after 60 minutes.
A scoreless first half did not mean a shortage of action, as both teams had several scoring chances. The Spartans nearly scored right before the half, as Hiroki Akiyama's shot attempt was barely saved by Sacramento State's Kenny. The half was also very physical, as 21 combined fouls were called.
The Spartans conclude their season with a 7-10-1 record, 4-6 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
