Men's Soccer Falls To Air Force 3-2 In Overtime

San Jose, Calif. - After battling for 93 minutes, the San Jose State University men’s soccer team fell to the Falcons of Air Force, 3-2, in overtime.  The loss drops the Spartans’ record to 8-7-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Falcons improve to 4-9-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the conference.

The solid defensive efforts by both teams led to a scoreless first half.  The Spartans led on offense with seven shots in the opening half.  Air Force’s goalkeeper, Brian Guyette, had a busy night in goal, making 12 saves for the Falcons, including five in the first half.

San Jose State opened the scoring with the first goal of the game in the second half.  Senior Ismael Ibarra headed a cross from junior Gavin Wenyon into the left corner of the Falcons’ goal for a 1-0 lead.

Air Force took little time in responding to the Spartans’ goal.  Less than three minutes later Ian Hauck found the back of the net for the Falcons on a pass from Kevin Rosser.  Hauck flicked the ball into the corner from 10 yards out.

The Spartans regained the lead with the first goal of Sam Shore’s career.  Shore blasted the ball into the upper left corner on a deflection by the goalie.  The goal gave San Jose State a 2-1 lead.

At 62:56, Air Force tied the game at 2-2 with a goal by Chris Matthews.  The play began with a shot by Josh Rhynard that was saved by San Jose State’s keeper Richard Mann.  Rhynard regained control of the ball and took a second shot that was saved by the Spartan defense.  Matthews collected the final deflection and found the back of the net to send the game into overtime.

Just 2:28 into the first extra period, the Spartans scored an own goal to record their second straight overtime loss.

San Jose State will be back in action on Sunday, November 4 for Senior Day against the Denver Pioneers.  The game is slated for 1:00 p.m. with a pre-game ceremony honoring seniors Savio Carrijo, Julio Gonzalez, Ismael Ibarra and Jacob Morrison.
