Spartan Men's Soccer Team Clinches MPSF Regular Season Championship

San Jose—Johnny Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal at 79:16 to give the San Jose State men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over San Diego State and the regular season Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship.

The Spartans had to fight for the championship. San Diego State scored its goal in the first period as Heath Creager put it in the net off a Kenny Fechner corner kick and a pass from Kevin Sapanli. The Aztecs also held the lead in shots in the first half, outshooting SJSU 8-5.

San Jose State scored both of its goals in the second half and outshot the Aztecs 6-3. Randy Poggio scored at 55:27 off a breakaway pass from Jose Juarez. The game winner then came at 79:16 as the ball was headed around in the goal before Gonzalez was able to score the goal. Dylan Pender and Juarez each got an assist on the play.

Spartan goalie Tyler Tratten made six saves as he improved his record to 4-1. Aztec goalie Colin Hanke made three saves.

San Jose State improved its record to 10-4-2 overall and 5-1 in the MPSF, while San Diego State falls to 7-5-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the MPSF. The Spartans will host Stanford on Thursday in its final home match of the season.
