Buzzer-beater ends men's soccer winning streak at four; UNLV posts 1-0 win

Las Vegas, Nev.----- UNLV senior midfielder Boomer Arbelaez scored the match’s only goal with one second remaining in regulation play as the Rebels ended San Jose State University’s four-game winning streak, 1-0, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer contest.

Arbelaez beat Spartan goalkeeper Daniel Benton with a shot to the right corner of the goal after receiving a pass from Rod Dyachenko with less than 10 seconds remaining.

UNLV’s victory (6-9, 5-4 MPSF) was its second 1-0 decision over San Jose State (5-10-1, 4-5 MPSF) this season. The Rebels defeated the Spartans by a 1-0 score on October 15 prior to the start of San Jose State’s four-match winning streak.

Peter Clitheroe made three saves as he posted his second shutout of 2004 against San Jose State. Benton was credited with six saves in a losing effort.

The Spartans return to action, Thursday, September 4 when it hosts nationally-ranked and MPSF leader New Mexico in a 7:00 p.m. conference match in Spartan Stadium.
